Core content: 

  • Light fundamentals: ray, wave, and particle optics
  • Wave optics: Maxwell’s equations, planewaves, reflection, refraction, interference and diffraction
  • Light–matter interactions: Dispersion of optical materials (Lorentz model), absorption, emission
  • Geometrical optics: paraxial approximation, lenses, mirror, prism
  • Optical instruments: basics of human vision, microscopes, telescopes and imaging systems

Complementary knowledge:

  • Polarization: linear, circular, elliptical
  • Light sources: stimulated emission, LED and laser
  • Numerical analysis of propagating waves

Special knowledge:

  • Coherence of light
