- Optical thin-film structures: Single film, multilayer films, and related components
- Basic waveguide structures: mirror waveguides, dielectric slab waveguides, optical fibers, surface-plasmon polaritons
- Properties of guided waves: optical waveguide mode, effective index
- Coupled-mode theory: distributed feedback, fiber Bragg gratings, directional couplers
- Photonic integrated circuits: components and systems, integrated structures
