Master's Programme in Multilingual Communication and Translation Studies, 120 cr

Upon successful completion of the master's degree programme, the student:

• will be able to work independently and to apply scientific knowledge and methods in their work

• will be able to work as an expert in their field

• will be able to work in diverse teams and projects

• will be able to solve new and complex problems encountered in their work or other activities

• will recognize the limits of their knowledge and skills, and be capable of developing their expertise independently

• will be able to design and implement independent scientific research and to present the research findings appropriately, employing previous research in a critical but respectful manner

• will have broad competence in the research methods applied within their discipline and the ability to demonstrate sound scientific reasoning and argumentation.

In addition, upon successful completion of the master's programme in Multilingual Communication and Translation Studies, the student

• will be able to describe and justify the qualifications for professional translation and interpreting

• will be able to analyse, interpret, produce, and proofread texts in a competent and professional manner

• will be able to analyse their own information needs, search for information using versatile sources, and apply it appropriately

• will be able to use the key tools of their field and maintain their technological skills

• will be able to perform as an expert in multilingual communication, translation, and interpreting, and will be competent in developing the processes of the field

• will be aware of the social and societal role of a translator or interpreter, and will be able to act professionally and ethically in multilingual and multicultural communication situations with customers and other stakeholders

• will be familiar with the terminology and research methods of translation studies

• will be able to critically evaluate and apply scientific knowledge and research results to translating and interpreting

• will have attained the skills for scientific research as well as the qualifications for post-graduate translation studies.

The students who have completed the Master's Programme in Multilingual Communication and Translation Studies have highly developed communication skills and an excellent command of at least two languages: their A working language, Finnish, and their B working language, either English, French, Swedish, German, or Russian. In the Master's Programme in Multilingual Communication and Translation Studies, you can specialise in translation technology, editing, translation of creative texts, specialised translation, or interpreting, with the option of also acquiring the qualifications for court interpreting. In addition, graduates of the Master's Programme in Multilingual Communication and Translation Studies have the competence to apply scientific knowledge in their discipline and to apply for doctoral studies.
