Content description

Doctoral Programme in Literary Studies offers the opportunity for postgraduate studies for doctoral students specializing in either Finnish Literature or Comparative Literature. Orientation to Comparative Literature is possible regardless of language area. Students who have completed a master's degree in literary studies at the University of Tampere, masters in the field of literature from other universities and postgraduate students studying written text and narration across disciplines are eligible to apply to the programme. The required bridge studies are agreed on a case-by-case basis.

The education provided in the programme focuses on the study of literary phenomena as part of the field of art and culture, the historical continuum of literature, and current forms of domestic and international literature. The review of literary history emphasizes in particular the characteristics of Finnish literature in relation to national and international culture and literary tradition. The program also emphasizes the theory of literary text, poetics, the development of concepts in relation to other sciences, and the many intersections of literature, language, and philosophy. The programme participates particularly strongly in the international narrative theoretical debate, which produces methodological tools for other fields of text research in both the cultural and social sciences.

The research carried out within the doctoral programme represents the national top of literary studies in the mentioned areas, is very well known internationally and offers a unique educational profile in this respect also to students applying to the programme from other universities.
