Tutkimustavoitteet

My research focuses on design principles related to space efficiency and material efficiency, which are linked to project feasibility, sustainability, and the circular economy. My work involves numerous case studies of constructed timber apartment buildings, exploring the architectural and structural solutions employed.

Special attention is given to net apartment efficiency, the thickness of structural elements, and comparative analyses of material efficiency and carbon footprints in intermediate floors.

Tutkimuskohteet

The construction of timber apartment buildings has been particularly common in mid-rise buildings, which are 3 to 8 stories high. My research examines 55 constructed timber apartment buildings, providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of timber construction in Finland. The study focuses on the architectural and structural solutions used in Finland between 2018 and 2022 under the Land Use and Building Act, which came into effect on January 1, 2018.

The construction methods used in the case study sample were either volumetric element construction method (3D), or panel construction method (2D), and the study explores the differences between these two construction methods.
