This option of Advanced Theme Studies in Education consists of two independent but thematically related courses that approach education – broadly defined – from international and multidisciplinary perspectives. The course entitled "Schooling and childhoods in socialist and post-socialist societies" looks at the development of education and institutions for children in the context of former socialist countries and the diverse and far from linear socio-political transformations that these countries encountered after the collapse of the Berlin Wall.
The second course “Global responsibility” continues bringing to light the embeddedness of education in diverse contexts. It discusses the concept of the global in general and addresses the question of how to envision “global responsibility” as a focus of research and professional practice in particular. Both courses enroll students across social sciences, offering everyone a unique opportunity to work with teachers and students from different disciplines. This cross-disciplinary cooperation helps to bring to light the importance of interrogating the knowledge production practices behind different understandings of education and its role in research and practice.
