Tapio Salminen

Olen Suomen, Itämeren alueen ja Euroopan keskiajan, uuden ajan alun ja pitkän aikavälin historiaan keskittynyt historiantutkija. Vuosina 2022-24 johdan ja toimin vastaavana tutkijana Koneen Säätiön rahoittamassa Viabundus Suomi 1350–1650 -hankkeessa, jonka yhteydessä luodaan Suomen keskiajan ja uuden ajan alun liikennereittien avoin paikkatietokanta ja digitaalinen kartasto osana eurooppalaista Viabundus-projektia.

I am a Finnish historian and medievalist specialized in medieval, pre-industrial and longue durée history of the Baltic Sea area and Europe. In 2022-24 I am the PI and leader of the project Viabundus Finland 1350–1650 -database and GIS-location -project of Late Medieval and Early Modern roads in Finland. The project is and independend affilial of the European Viabundus-project coordinated by the Forschungsstelle für die Geschichte des Hanseraums und der Ostsee FGHO (Lübeck) and the Institut für Historische Landesforschung der Universität Göttingen, Germany.

My themes of interest include:

- Management of information and communication, textual agencies and the use of paper in the civic and territorial administration in the Baltic Sea Area from the 13th Century to the 16th

- Forms and uses of medieval written communication and textual practices, everyday multilinguality and use of languages

- Public roads and travelling in the Baltic Sea area and Northern Europe from prehistory to present. Road as a space.

- History of Tallinn (medieval Reval) and Contacts over the Gulf of Finland

- Landscapes of power

- The "longue durée" relationship between local society and environment

- Local, translocal and transgenerational in the every-day communication, travelling, networks of information of difgferent layers of society in the Baltic Sea area

- Medieval piracy in the Baltic Sea

- High medieval legatine representation
