This course covers a broad range of ethical and sustainability considerations related to the design, development, and use of modern information technology. It offers approaches and methods for a more sustainable design practice (i.e., wisely critical, responsible, and taking multiple perspectives). The course offers relevant viewpoints to analyse existing IT applications and their long-term implications, as well as methods for putting critical perspectives into practice in the design of IT products and services. The course draws critical perspectives from Ethics of Technology, Science and Technology Studies, Critical Algorithm Studies, AI ethics and Future Studies, and design thinking perspectives from Value-Sensitive Design, Responsible Design, Critical Design, and Human-Centred Design.
In terms of learning methods, the course includes lectures with plenty of interactions and discussions, several creative personal assignments, and a small group assignment. There's no final exam. Remote/hybrid participation is possible but the best learning experience results from in-class attendance.
