Master's Programme in Civil Engineering, 120 op

Tampereen yliopisto
Osaamistavoitteet

After completing the Master’s Degree Programme in Civil Engineering, students will be able to

  • collect, understand and critically evaluate information.
  • solve complicated and unpredictable problems by applying scientific methods, organizational practices and technological innovations in various expert, development, and leadership roles.
  • identify and assess the impacts of built environment and develop ecologically, socially, and economically efficient and sustainable solutions through participation in public discussion and cooperation in multidisciplinary teams of experts.

By majoring in Geotechnical Engineering, the graduates will also be able to:

  • describe and consider the geological formations of the Finnish ground, the presence and movement of ground water, and the effect of soil conditions on land use planning and construction, and use open data
  • design operative road and street structures in terms of loading and frost resistance and choose appropriate pavement types for road and street structures
  • analyze and design various types of foundation, ground improvement and preconstruction methods, taking into account the requirements set by the connected structures, loading and local soil conditions
  • explain the principles of geotechnical design and knows how to use up-to-date calculation tools to solve geotechnical design tasks
  • choose and design appropriate preconstruction, reinforcement and foundation method for infrastructures, and design and dimension a pipeline trench
  • explain the relevant properties and applications of secondary aggregates, and administrative processes, other measures towards circular economy in infra construction
  • know how to create a structural model, loads and dimension conventional reinforced concrete and steel structures

By majoring in Structural Engineering, the graduates will also be able to:

  • understand and apply scientific methods and structural engineering principles to analyse, design and assess structures to ensure they are efficient and stable.
  • distinguish the central actors, questions, challenges, and solutions in the field of resilient and sustainable building design and construction.
  • develop and apply new innovative technologies and methods in building and construction.
  • apply leadership, collaboration, management, and engineering skills in multidisciplinary teams to engineer solutions for safe and sustainable structures and buildings.
  • conduct independent and collaborative academic research and communicate it to researchers, professional audiences, and the general public.

By majoring in Sustainable Transport, the graduates will also be able to:

  • understand the role of transport in developing sustainable urban areas, and the critical role of transport in achieving sustainable development goals.
  • understand and apply transport and mobility principles as they relate to sustainable urban development and analyse their complex interrelations within urban systems.
  • apply leadership, collaboration, management, and engineering skills in multidisciplinary teams to advance sustainable transport systems in urban environments worldwide.
  • distinguish the central actors, questions, conflicts, and solutions in the field of sustainable urban development.
  • critically evaluate sustainable development projects and case studies in their global context and formulate the best practices in a local context.
  • conduct independent and collaborative academic research and communicate it to researchers, professional audiences, and the general public.
After completing the degree, the student is equipped to drive sustainable change, has abilities for lifelong learning, and is eligible for scientific doctoral studies.
