What is the essence of this device? It is a virtual reality (VR) headset, designed for the PlayStation 4 and aimed to introduce and familiarize players with a new and mysterious world of virtual reality. The device was developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment and released in 2016 as an accessory for PlayStation 4. However, it was the first accessible project aimed at totally changing the way we play video games. And it did, despite some technical inconveniences. Remember, we are just entering the era of advanced virtual experiences.
I purchased my PS VR in 2018. It was a full edition version, so the set included a camera and a VR worlds game. The only thing to buy was a pair of move motion controllers, which are actually extra facilities, but for some VR projects, these are mandatory. The whole kit cost 270€. This was a quite loyal price considering the fact that at the very start of sales, a normal set without a camera and VR Worlds app was about 399€. Moreover, there was already a diversity of new VR projects available at the time I got my headset. Testing “Resident Evil 7” and “Doom VFR” totally blew my mind. I was astounded by the level of immersion, which was actually supplemented by Magic sticks and over-ear headphones. These two projects are already the reason to take a fling at the device.
Nevertheless, users usually come across some common issues, that distract the attention from a proper immersion. The headset is a wired device, so gamers need to connect it to the special block which is itself connected to the PlayStation. There is a generic ritual to wrap yourself with wires in a way these cables won’t bother you during the gameplay.
Moreover, the quality of the picture inside the headset may badly surprise you. The image is grainy, and the resolution is low. You will probably get used to it – but you can’t get away from it. Actually, this is a normal case as virtual reality equipment is a quite recent innovation and requires improvements that are based on players’ experiences. Possibly, the fact is also that the device may be improved but then it will be complemented with more expensive components, and these are conducive to the cost increase and drop in consumers’ demand.
Finally, the camera is sometimes unable to detect the light indicators of the helmet and move controllers because of such reasons as there is a lack of light in the room; you are staying too close to the receiver. That is why users are advised to play in the lit surroundings and follow a distance of not less than two meters. Otherwise, the system will probably be unable to detect your moves.
In my opinion, PlayStation VR is the most convenient and affordable way to experience virtual reality for those people who have PlayStation 4 or 5, as more and more interest occurs around these consoles. The price is quite loyal, regarding the whole spectrum of other VR headsets; it possesses all the necessary equipment and is simple either in connecting or in use. Overall, the headset delivers unforgettable emotions and experiences with either a non-action (player is not supposed to act, just watch) or interactive (player is supposed to fully interact with virtual surroundings) simulation.
