Introducing a wintry pastime, where you sit and wait,
With time to ponder and contemplate.
“Why am I here, what’s the point,
Aren’t the fish asleep in the ice water joint?”
Actually no, they’re swimming about,
So grab your rod and lure them out!
—
A beautiful morning on a small lake,
Catching fish, a piece of cake.
Nothing more than a hole in the ice,
It’s enough, it will suffice.
The controls are easy, just use the mouse.
This friendly tip was on the house.
Okay, there’s more to it, you can wander around,
Hike the whole lake or listen to the sounds.
You’re not alone, there’s others too,
Trying to get ingredients for a healthy stew.
Standing close you can hear them chit-chat,
Making awkward small talk about this and that.
There’s different bait and lures to choose,
With lots of options to peruse.
What’s the difference, I don’t know,
Just take your pick and off we go!
Now I’m using a good-looking jig,
The fish will come to me, I’m sure of it!
Being calm and zen and all that,
Don’t know how long frozen I sat.
Then all of a sudden, I feel a yank,
Expecting nothing, it must be a blank.
The line comes out and there is a fish,
I’m in seventh heaven, an all-around bliss!
But lo and behold, what is this,
My neighbor Reijo has caught so much fish.
Filled with envy and so irate,
I have to beat him, it is my fate!
First thing to do in this new plot,
Is to look around and find a good spot.
It isn’t here, it isn’t there,
It doesn’t seem to be anywhere!
The clock is ticking, with nothing in sight,
Intense mouse clicking, it’s gotta work, right?
Wandering around to and fro,
Filled with desperation, grief and woe.
In a secluded bay I make a wish,
Lord, just for this day, grant me fish.
A whale it doesn’t need to be,
Neither a leviathan from the sea,
Just something that’ll give me joy,
Maybe get on the high score list too, oh boy!
A perch or salmon is what I need.
Something’s biting, I can feel it now,
It won’t get away, this I vow!
Pulling the rod with all my might,
Not a very pleasant sight,
But out comes fish, rod and all,
I scream and stumble and eventually fall.
I got a fish, it’s a grand one,
Must be the biggest catch under the sun!
Not being quick means losing the race.
A minute to go and I’m far from the goal,
Running and sprinting may yet save my soul.
I dash at the beach, landing on all fours,
Still slightly shaken, I inquire my scores:
“Did I win, where’s the prize?”
Alas, to my great surprise,
I didn’t quite make it in time,
Resulting in a very sad rhyme.
“I was just an inch away, surely you jest!”
To my major dismay, they point to the rules:
“That’s our final say, got no time for fools”
And that’s wrap up the thing.
It was kind of fun,
Even if I couldn’t win.
While the game isn’t pretty and looks kinda old,
It is very authentic; you can feel the cold.
I’m clearly not qualified to give any tips,
Just keep in mind, there’s always fish and chips.
