The Chaotic Goose Chase, or Is It? A Review of Goose Goose Duck

Have you played Town of Salem? And then in the pandemic you have seen the infamous Among Us and thought to yourself: this is just too simple and boring? Then this is the perfect game for you.

Town of Salem and its updated sequel have been a huge success in the co-op social murder mystery genre. I always enjoyed having ulterior motives while also blending in with others but especially with the first game I always felt limited in terms of gameplay. When Among Us followed the footsteps of Town of Salem, I was happy to be able to move around but this time it felt very limiting in the sense of motivation. I mean killing people in secret and blaming others or trying to find out who the impostor is a good basis, but you can only play it a few times before it gets boring on its own. That is where Goose Goose Duck comes in. The perfect combination of the two games.

In Goose Goose Duck, similar to Among Us, you can walk around a map filled with tasks for the good people (the aforementioned Geese) or you can hunt for the good people (the aforementioned Duck) depending on your role. Best thing the game manages to incorporate is to add different roles to both sides and even a third group of players with neutral roles. The geese don’t know who to trust but has special abilities. The Canadian role reports its own corpse upon death, the Lover role connects two people, and they can win separate from the group if they survive in the end as a couple, Sheriff role has a chance to shoot others but if they mistakenly shoot a goose they die as well and so many more roles. Each role adds a different gameplay element with so many strategical possibilities. Similarly, the ducks have different roles with different abilities to kill others. Especially with the addition of unique roles on different maps, the replayability and unique possible scenarios for your each game session is almost endless. Also, the neutral roles are just as important as the ducks. For example, my favourite role is a neutral role; the dodo bird. The dodo bird wins on its own when it is removed from the game in a meeting. Making the players of the role catalysts for pure chaos.

These twists in the genre make the game extremely entertaining to play with friends. The only issue to mention is with this many roles and combinations you might have to take your time a little bit in the beginning to read and learn about what each role is capable of. From my experience, just rolling with whatever the people get in their turn and learning about different roles as you are playing is the best way to go but it could create some confusion and take some time.

Overall, the game is a great twist in its genre. I have always liked this type of games where you are either trying to cooperate with others or trying to sneakily hunt others, but the addition of unique roles and abilities improves the gameplay and adds incredible replayability. Next time you and your friends are searching for a game to play, I highly recommend checking out Goose Goose Duck. I’m sure you will be hooked, bombed or shocked while having fun with your friends.
