Time Recoil Review

Kill bad guys in the past, save the world in Time Recoil by 10Tons Ltd.

Time Recoil is a top-down shooter that utilizes slow motion as a mechanic. You begin the game in a rebel base in the ruins of Paris and soon learn of this very bad guy called Mr. Time (who bears a striking resemblance to a former president of Finland with his bald head and big square glasses…). Because you can withstand the ordeal of traveling in time, you need to stop him, by all means necessary. Usually it’s by killing bad guys, but sometimes you need to rescue scientists for your cause as well.

You can perform combos by ending the lives of multiple bad guys in a row while in slow-mo. The further you progress in the game the more combo abilities you unlock. For example, two consecutive slow-motion kills earn you a dash, which can be used to make a new entrance into a room if a door is out of the question, and decimate everything living in your path at the same time. The game does a fairly good job of utilizing these skills to solve puzzles; in one particular level, you need to get past a rapidly firing laser gun, and the only way to do that is to stop time completely. Lucky for you this can be done by sending eight bad guys to the pearly gates, while in slow-mo of course.

The levels get gradually harder, but their length is about the same once you know what to do. A level usually does not take more than a few minutes in total. There is some repetition that comes with the territory – you spill your guts from a single hit, so you will find yourself restarting levels repeatedly as you try to find the most optimal route. There is some cool trickery involved though – some levels are really easy if you can preserve your combos from the previous level and annihilate a large group of baddies in a single blow. And don’t worry, if you die you start the level with the combo still activated.

The game can be played either on a mouse and keyboard, or on a controller. While the controller might seem like a good idea, the game requires a fair amount of aiming and a mouse seemed better suited for the task. The story is told with speech bubbles in a cartoonish way, and while it adds a flavor of its own it does get boring after a while. The lack of voice acting makes you want to skip the story bubbles even more to get back into shooting guns and taking names.

If you like games where you decimate everything around you, the levels are quick and your death count doesn’t matter, then you will enjoy Time Recoil!
