Dixit is one of the most interesting tabletop games that I have played so far. It is easy to learn and perfect to play with friends. But most importantly, the game welcomes all kinds of people to play, no matter if you are an introvert or an extrovert, a local or a foreigner, or a kid or an adult!
At the beginning of the game, each player receives 6 random cards from the deck. Each card shows a dreamy picture on it, such as a couple dancing on the cloud or a book with a pair of wings, you name it. An active player of each round who picks one of his cards, says a word to describe that one card and puts it face-down on the table. Based on the active player’s word, the other players also pick one of their cards to put it face-down on the table to confuse the other players. All the cards are different in the game, so if the active player chooses his card and says “Betrayal” as the keyword, there will not be the same card in the others’ hands. However, there could be another picture that also somehow shows the theme “Betrayal”. The goal of the game is to guess which one of the cards on the table is from the active player.
While the rules are so simple, it creates infinite possibilities to play the game. For example, last time I was playing with my international friends who are also studying Finnish, we decided to limit the word by the active player to be a Finnish word. Then, when we ran out of words to say, we changed the restriction to be within 5 letters in English. The setting of the game induces the creativity and imagination of the players. The more creative you are, the more you will enjoy the game. That’s why the game would suit all kinds of people. The picture on the cards is also pleasing to look at. A boy with a sword standing in front of a huge dragon, a tornado in one’s palm, and an island in the sky, the pictures are just as abstract as they seem. One would not simply understand the meaning of the pictures, but when another player understands the picture the same way as you do, this is the moment when the connection appears – the social connection that you feel close with another because of the mutual understanding of some indescribable things. Dixit may actually find you a soulmate without effort.
Overall, this game is really fun to play and I definitely recommend it to everyone. For a games night or a family gathering, this game will bring you an unforgettable fun time.
