Hero Siege is a hack and slash indie role-playing game (RPG) that was released in 2014 by Panic Art Studios. The player can choose from 16 classes (with an additional class coming next patch) with unique abilities. The objective in the game is to defeat Satan, but the actual endgame content does not depend on the story so much. Rather, the focus is on upgrading the character through rare satanic items and hero levels gained from killing monsters.
Available classes
I played the season feature (where all players must level up a completely new character to play with for two to three months) with the barbarian class. He is a savage brute and relies on melee combat. Moreover, the barbarian has an ability called “Whirlwind”, where he spins around swinging his weapons. This ability sounded perfect for me, as I prefer to play games with minimum effort for maximum efficiency. Additionally, I have played the barbarian in Diablo III, which is an action RPG like Hero Siege, and I wanted to see if the barbarian class (and the whirlwind ability) in Hero Siege was anything like my previous experiences.
The barbarian’s whirlwind
To my liking, the whirlwind ability was everything I expected it to be. I was able to defeat my enemies by brainlessly keeping my right mouse button pressed down. While the game does have multiple difficulties – Normal, Nightmare, Hell, and Inferno – I always played on a difficulty where I could overcome my enemies at a relatively fast pace. I believe that this is the most efficient way to play the game, as I could maximize the number of items that enemies drop after being defeated.
Typically, the gameplay revolves around defeating monsters in the campaign. There are less significant monsters that inhabit each area, and at the end of each act (a series of multiple areas with weaker monsters) there is a stronger monster (the “boss”) that drops more powerful items after being defeated. The objective is very simple: the players must defeat all monsters as fast as possible to maximize the number of items that they can get. The faster the player can defeat monsters, the more loot there will be.
I really like how the endgame of Hero Siege works. The players are not immediately rewarded with huge amounts of items, but the progress comes very gradually instead. It takes a lot of time to maximize the character’s power, as important items are very scarce. As of now, I have played the new season for over 40 hours, and I am not even halfway to perfecting my barbarian’s items.
My barbarian’s incomplete set of items
The game also features loot boxes. They can be purchased with real money and contain random cosmetic items that can be worn on the playable classes. However, as the loot boxes in Hero Siege contain cosmetic items only, they have no real effect on gameplay.
