Awesome Games Done Quick – Speedrunning for charity

Awesome Games Done Quick 2024 (AGDQ2024) is a game speedrunning charity event spanning from January 14th to January 21^st next year. The event is hosted by Games Done Quick (GDQ) that is known for running series of charity video game marathons. These marathon events usually occur twice a year and GDQ also publishes and streams speedrunning content to YouTube and Twitch. They have teamed up with several charities over their ten-year history. Most notable of these are Prevent Cancer Foundation and Doctors Without Borders USA to which Games Done Quick is the largest individual fundraising event globally. It has gathered over 43 million dollars to charity over the years.

Next year’s first charity event by GDQ, Awesome Games Done Quick 2024 starts at January 14^th. Apart from the event’s pre-show, finale and occasional interviews when setting up the next play run, the charity event consists primarily of speedruns of different games. These runs are scheduled to specific players, to different time slots over the week and the stream of the event is running 24/7 until the end of the event. The players performing in the event must apply for it beforehand and the games played are vast variety of different games from different genres.

GDQ’s speedrunning events invest into a sense of community – during streams there are announcements about the donations given and in the Twitch stream there are constantly several people commenting the speedruns. The donators may also include a message when donating which often include for example good luck wishes to the speedrunners. The viewers also challenge each other to give donations and place goals where they try to achieve certain amount of donations together.

Games Done Quick also has a strict zero tolerance policy for any kind of harassment. They highlight that everyone should be treated with respect and ask for streamers desired pronouns for example. The latter was quite a new phenomenon for me at least, but a very welcomed one.

So, in conclusion if you are interested to watch some high-level speedruns in a benevolent content I highly recommend AGDQ2024. At the same time if you want you can do something good via donations. The only downside is that the charities are quite USA / North America centric, but that doesn’t remove the fact that help is needed everywhere. Nothing also stops you for giving a donation to a charity you choose yourself while watching this awesome event.
