Comparatively most of the sets in the series are on the smaller side of the scale among the many other Lego builds, but they are both incredibly fun to work on and they do not take up much time to complete. Each set comes with simple instructions to build and usually are not complex at all. They can be built in less then an hour if you really push for it, but I suggest you take your time and slowly put it together in a calm and relaxing environment. The process of building the cars may not be complicated but as you put it together it feels like working on a real car at certain points. Especially in the models that capture the essence of the original car, it feels rewarding to see the end product.
The series starting from 2015, provides small scale builds of many different car models and even though the official age rating indicates that these sets are for children above the age of 8, they are enjoyable for everyone older than that who likes cars. These models range from exotic vintage cars to modern hypercars and even though the build quality can vary between different sets, most of them are worth your effort and can be very nice collectibles.
Even though these sets are built with around 250-300 pieces on average, most of the cars seem pretty well designed. Especially some of the newer sets in the collection really does justice to the original cars’ design and carry the stylistic features very accurately. However, there are some examples that do not look as nice as some of the others in the collection (yes, I’m looking at you Aston Martin Valkyrie). Other than the one specific exception, newer sets seem to be able to capture the essence of the original cars better and better.
Pricewise the sets are not too expensive, but I wouldn’t call them cheap either. Most of the sets are available at around 20-25 Euro mark except for the double sets that include two different car models and some extra background for your collection like a small car repair shop or a pitstop design at a reasonable price. Some simple sets with lower number of pieces may feel a bit too easy and too quick to build for the price but if you want to build a collection every model is really fun to both build and toy around. Considering the design detail, the price and the number of pieces I strongly recommend Ferrari F8 Tributo as it has a moderately more complex and fun building process that eventually hands you an amazing brick replica of the original car.
Overall, as different types of Lego sets gain more and more popularity with people from every age group, Speed Champion sets are an amazing place to start your Lego collection. Since the sets are smaller in scale compared to many other sets, your collection will not be taking up excessive space while also being fun to build and looking cool as a collection.
