In the middle of October of 2023, when slowly but surely, the light was fading, the weather was getting cold and everything was wet, I was facing the unbearable task of unpacking dozens of moving boxes. While trying to think of ways to make the task more tolerable, I started to browse through different podcasts in Spotify and stumbled upon Resident Evil lorecast by The Fumbling 4 and the All Mighty Crit. Being a long time fan of the franchise I was intrigued and started listening to the first episode titled “Umbrella Organization”. In the episode, they discussed the history and lore of the Umbrella Corporation, a pretty well-known organization within the game franchise, very thoroughly. After the episode was over, I was hooked. The lorecast really made the unpacking process quite satisfactory, and even when it was over, I continued to listen to the lorecast further.
Lorecasts are a great way to get into any game’s lore that you might be interested in. No matter if the game is your favourite game, or if it is a game that you really want to learn more about, lorecasts could just be the thing for you. Do you not have enough time to play a certain game but still want to know more about it and its lore? Again, they might just be the thing for you! Even if you do not want to play a game but its world and lore seems really interesting. Lorecasts are also really great if you simply want something game related to listen while doing mundane tasks. Like washing dishes for example.
Lorecasts have become increasingly more common in the past few years and arguably the epidemic had something to do with the rising popularity. Today, you can find numerous different lorecasts from famous streaming services like Spotify. Lorecasts are podcasts that cover all kinds of different lores from various mediums like games, movies, comics and more. If you can think of it, chances are there is a lorecast about it. They deepdive into a certain lore and discuss anything revolving around or related to it. Most common forms of game lorecasts talk about the game’s or game series’ story, characters, worlds and other things you can find in the game. It is not unusual for people who make them to have more than one podcast about different games. For example, the group that I mentioned before, The Fumbling 4 and the All Mighty Crit, have made lorecasts about Resident Evil, Legend of Zelda and Warhammer. In addition to their lorecasts, they have podcasts where they play various TTRPGs, like Dungeons & Dragons, World of Darkness and Cyberpunk. The lorecast that I am most familiar with, is the Resident Evil lorecast.
The Resident Evil Lorecast covers everything that is related to the game series: Games, movies, comics, characters, worlds, even merch. They have made over 100 episodes, where they talk about one installation of the medium and its content in one to two episodes. Every episode also has an intermission where every member of the podcasts introduces and discusses articles, merch and everything between, related to the current episode. The production quality in the first episodes is not especially great but not bad either. The quality of the show improves after a while, most likely because of the rising base of listeners. If you are a fan of the franchise or just interested about its lore, I would give my heartfelt recommendation of the podcast. You can find them on Spotify and other podcast streaming services.
In summary, lorecasts are a great way to deepdive into the lore of different games, movies, comics and other franchises whether you are a long time fan, newcomer or merely interested in the medium and want to learn more. They are easily accessed since most of them are free and can be found without too much effort. Or even if you are not interested in them, they can be a good background noise for other activities.
