Disc room is a game of you dying a lot. Again and again. It is something that happens even if you try to avoid it due to the difficulty of the game. But it is also something you want to do. You, after all, are not dying for nothing; you are dying for science.
You are one of the international scientists trying to figure out what the mysterious disc in Jupiter’s orbit is. You enter it and find more discs inside. And what would be a more scientific way to study them than to get sliced up by these deadly things? This is your brilliant game plan to study all the varying types. You also have different challenges and by completing them you get more rooms open and consequently get closer to figuring out what is going on.
In Disc Room dying happens often, but if you failed in your goal of dying to a certain disc or surviving long enough, don’t worry. You get to enter the room back instantly. No loading screens to get on your nerves. Or maybe you want to pick another ability that you think would better suit the room and its challenges. Maybe you want to be able to slow time to successfully get trough narrow caps, or maybe you might want to duplicate yourself as a life insurance of sorts.
The biggest challenges you face are the different Gatekeepers. In their rooms surviving and dying are not the only things you have to worry about; you should also defeat them in some way. Some of these were really testing my skills. The Gatekeeper that required me to collect little round things around the room seemed to get me every time I was close to defeating it. I have to say though, that it felt so good when I finally did succeed.
My journey was full of struggles, but ultimately it led to so much satisfaction. It was intriguing to see little snippets of story told without a dialogue. It was all so mysterious. The satisfying gameplay and What the Heck is Going On -storytelling really kept me going. After defeating the final Gatekeeper, I thought I had bested the game. But oh boy, I was wrong. The game has a reverse Hard Mode, which if you did not guess it, is harder. This was happy surprise and gives the game more content. So now it’s time to die some more before I know truly all that this game has to offer. But I bet it’s deadly fun.
