2018 is going to be an interesting year for gaming.
As the end of 2017 is drawing closer, this is a good opportunity to take a look into the future and see what the year 2018 will hold for us gamers. So, here is my list of the most interesting upcoming games of 2018. Of course there are many more interesting games coming than there are on my list, but this is my pick of the litter. The games that have a confirmed release date will be listed in the order of that date, followed by games without confirmed release dates in alphabetical order.
Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom
Platforms: PC, PS4
Release Date: 19.01
Genre: Role-Playing
In 2011 the Japanese developer Level-5 teamed up with the world-famous Studio Ghibli to give us the beautiful role-playing game Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, and next year the players will be able to return to that beautiful world. Even though Ghibli is not cooperating with Level-5 this time around, I’m positive that the game will still be a must-have for any fans of Japanese role-playing games.
Dragon Ball FighterZ
Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
Release Date: 26.01
Genre: Fighting
Dragon Ball is one of the most beloved manga and anime franchises in the world, and with Arc System Works (creators of the acclaimed BlazBlue and Guilty Gear series) creating FighterZ, I’d say that we are in good hands. Judging by the trailers and gameplay videos that have been released, we are in for an action-packed ride that will satisfy not only Dragon Ball fans, but also anyone who enjoys a good fighting game.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
Release Date: 13.02
Genre: Role Playing
This one is for the history buffs: a realistic, historical role-playing game set in the Kingdom of Bohemia in the 1400s. The creators of the game at Warhorse Studios have stated that they have been working together with historians to make their game as accurate as possible, and even the game’s soundtrack features period-accurate music. If I’ve piqued your interest, be sure check out this medieval adventure in February.
Death Stranding
Platform: PS4
Release Date: TBA
Genre: Action
Okay, I admit that I am jumping the gun a bit with this one, since there is a fair chance that the game won’t be released in 2018. Still, I find myself unable to ignore it. This game is not only the first game by the legendary game director Hideo Kojima after he left Konami, it is also his first non-Metal Gear game in a long time. This alone makes Death Stranding something that everyone should pay attention to. Add a couple of enigmatic trailers into the mix, and we got one of the most highly-anticipated games (possibly) coming out in 2018.
Detroit: Become Human
Platform: PS4
Release Date: Q1/Q2
Genre: Interactive drama, Action-adventure
The developer Quantic Dream (Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls) is known for their interactive dramas, and this time around they are delivering us a story not unlike the classic science fiction film Blade Runner: the game focuses around androids and their struggles to find their place in the world. With three protagonists, a storyline molded by the choices of the player and multiple endings, Detroit: Become Human is sure to deliver a touching story about what it means to be human. If you enjoy a good interactive drama, I strongly suggest keeping an eye on this one.
God of War
Platform: PS4
Release Date: Q1
Genre: Action-adventure, Hack and Slash
Next year, the angriest god-slayer of video game history, Kratos, returns. And this time around, a few things have changed. Firstly, the Greek mythology of the previous games has been changed to a Norse one. Also, Kratos has a son now, forcing the brave warrior to mature, show compassion and protect his son. Fear not, lovers of action, as some things never change: Kratos is still a fearsome warrior, and there’s going to be plenty of spectacularly brutal combat.
Kingdom Hearts III
Platforms: PS4, XBO
Release Date: TBA
Genre: Action, Role Playing
This has been a long wait, folks. Kingdom Hearts II was released in Europe all the way back in 2006, and ever since then fans have eagerly been awaiting for a sequel. There have been spin-offs and prequels to fill the void, but it just isn’t the same. But finally our long wait will end, as Kingdom Hearts III is scheduled for release next year. So if you are a fan of Disney, Final Fantasy or action role-playing games, Kingdom Hearts III is the game for you.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Platforms: PS4, XBO
Release Date: Q2
Genre: Action-adventure
Rockstar Games are known for their open world action-adventure games, and they have prepared a real treat for us next year: the long-awaited addition to the Red Dead-series, Red Dead Redemption 2. So there’s going to be outlaws, sheriffs, duels and everything else you’d expect from a western. But, at the end of the day, there really is nothing that I have to say about this one: it’s a new Rockstar game, and it’s a new Red Dead game. Enough said.
