Do you remember your very first gaming experience? When it comes to computer games, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is the one that has opened the door to the gaming world for me. As a five-year-old Harry Potter fan without any previous experiences with computer apart from playing the classic Microsoft 3D Pinball and drawing in Microsoft Paint, I decided to become a wizard. And this game made it possible for me.
Back then, it probably wasn’t really common for a five-year-old child to play computer games, but luckily for me – I have two older siblings, who showed this game to me. Impressed by the first book and movie from the Harry Potter Series, I couldn’t resist getting to know the wizarding world from yet another perspective. Taking on the role of the young wizard Harry Potter, I set on a journey through the mysterious corridors and chambers of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

You might be wondering why someone would voluntarily go to school in their free time, but the five-year-old me really couldn’t wait to learn something new from the wizarding world. Throughout the game, you attend most of the magic lessons mentioned in the book and movie, such as charms, defence against the dark arts, herbology, potions and even flying. After each lesson, you practice the spell or a new skill you have just learned in a vast “maze” of corridors and chambers. Your task is to collect all the challenge stars, which determine the number of faculty points you will be rewarded by the teacher.
Besides learning new spells, you explore the secrets of the castle. Hogwarts is full of hidden chambers and treasures, which can be only revealed by using magic. Therefore, the spells you learn in the lessons will be necessary for you to proceed in the game and, eventually, to fight the main Harry Potter series villain – Lord Voldemort. However, do not expect any high demands on your gaming skills – the game is adapted mostly to children, testing the player’s combination of skilfulness and logics. Even though each spell you learn is used for something different, you as a player do not have any impact on the choice of the spell Harry casts – it is chosen automatically based on the object you point at with the magic wand.
The spells you learn in lessons are necessary to proceed in the game
Even though a lot of time has passed since the first time I played this game and I do not wait for an owl bringing me my letter of acceptance from Hogwarts anymore, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone will always have something that takes me back to my childhood. Although I may get a little nostalgic when playing this game, I will be always happy to revisit it. If you are a Harry Potter series fan and you are sometimes harping back to those easy childhood times, this game will help you get there. At least for a while.
