Psychological games have been popular over the years, and it is possible to see game studios going towards horror or gore games due to the success of titles such as Outlast or the Amnesia franchise. In Sound Mind is the perfect example of how games can succeed without requiring triple-A game funding, developed by We Create Stuff. The game immerses us in the life of Desmond Wales, a doctor, and psychologist who works with the patients of Milton Haven, a city where something terrible happened and started to cause strange events. Desmond wakes up in his bed but feels disoriented and with psychedelic creatures lurking around, so he starts to look for answers in his office to try to find an explanation for what is happening.
With the help of Tonia, his cat, Desmond starts reviewing what happened in Milton Haven and dives into the tapes that he recorded with his patients, and the story of what occurred begins to unfold. Each patient has a different background story, and you, personifying the doctor, need to go and review what happened and find clues to understand the entire situation. The patient’s tapes bring an entirely different story and landscape that make you play in a completely different way to what you did in other tapes; each one of them has a specific mental illness that will create divergent enemies and make your investigation chaotic.
As with any other indie game, this one could improve in its graphics department, but considering it does not have the budget of mainstream franchises, we are witnessing a true masterpiece of video games; its soundtrack is exquisite and well-chosen for each stage of the history, the commitment to the accuracy of mental illness and the horror-suspense feeling during the whole game makes you commit to playing it, and on top of that, it has incredible funny moments that make you relax and take a break from all the mind games it has for you, puzzles, persecutions, creativity, suspense, horror, attractive history, the game has everything for all tastes, is worth to try it, help Desmond to discover what happened with his patients and the dirty things done by Mayer Pharmaceuticals.
