Rocket League is a 2015 released soccer video game, where instead of players you control a rocket-powered car. Even the description of the game sounds funny and interesting. The game is a sequel to a 2008 game named Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. The developers might have realized that the name was not that catchy. They also improved the gameplay of the previous game a lot.
The basic idea of the game is simple. You control a car in a game of soccer that lasts 5 minutes. there can be any number of cars from 2 to 8. In addition to driving, the cars can also jump and use ‘boost’ to move faster or even fly. More ‘boost’ can be found in the playing field and it is important to always have some, since the game is really fast paced. The playing field resemblances an actual soccer field except for being built like a cage, so there are walls and roof to prevent the ball or the players leaving the field.
It is very easy to get started in Rocket League, but the skill sealing is tremendously high, and you can always learn something new. The game is possible to play locally or online.
One of the best features of the game is its different approach to sports game genre. Sports games are usually representations of actual sports and usually doing that they fall flat. Rocket League does not have the same necessity to try to imitate a real sport. Because of this the game does not make the player feel irritated when something does not accurately recreate an image of the real life.
Currently most of the popular games played online are shooter or fighting games making Rocket League a unique experience. At the same time the game reminds us that the possibilities in game developing are endless when you just have a great idea to work with.
I myself enjoyed and still enjoy the game quite a lot. It’s unique style and 5 minutes long games make it a good relaxation when gaming gets too serious. I find myself from time to time going back playing this game, something I can’t say happens with most of the games. In the end there is something so stupid at the same as appealing about playing soccer with cars that go fast and can fly.
