Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a third-person adventurous action game by Respawn Entertainment. It is the newest game of the Star Wars franchise. The main character, Cal Kestis is a young scrapper, but he is also a trained Jedi knight. Cal drifts into the quest to revive the old order of Jedi’s, peacekeepers of the Star Wars universe. Events of the game locate somewhere between Star Wars movies Revenge of the Sith and New Hope.
The story draws with it from the very beginning. Dialogs and events carry the story further and Cal faces familiar enemies like stormtroopers and droids. Arch enemy, Second Sister, and her henchmen race with Cal on four planets to prevent the new Jedi Order from rising to power. At the very beginning of the game, Cal gets a sympathetic droid, BL-1, as a companion. BL-1 helps the hero by offering heal potions, opening doors, and scanning the area for secrets. Most of the characters are interesting and personal. Hero Cal seems a bit tame as a last Jedi in the galaxy, but side characters are successful in terms of story.
Fallen Order has characteristics from Tomb Raider ad Dark Souls with an adventurous platform and impossible enemies. The fighting happens with a lightsaber and using the power of the Jedi religion, the Force. When defeated, the player goes back to the checkpoint, which at worst can located be all the way back to the beginning of the level. Unlike in movies, stormtroopers almost always hits, so reducing the difficulty level seemed very tempting after a few hours. Beating enemies gain experience points, which accumulate skill points. Skill points can be used in learning new survival skills, abilities to Force and lightsaber attacks.
The lightsaber, as a primary weapon of Cal, can be customized. There are multiple choices to choose between different materials, switches, sleeves, and blade colors. With small progress in the story, there is also an option to build a two-bladed lightsaber. Building laser swords is a great addition, but the player can only develop cosmetic features.
Graphics of the game won’t disappoint even the most critical visualist. Beautiful landscapes could be admired for a moment or two. Characters are drawn realistically and dialogs look as natural as digital games can reach. The soundscape of the game is loyal to the franchise, even though Cantina Band or imperial March are not on the soundtrack.
There are a few major technical issues in the game. Cal got stuck inside the wall several times and the sound of the game disappeared totally at some point. The glitch was fixed by restarting the console. Every now and then the game stops buffering the next scene and it takes a while. With these glitches, the game seems unfinished.
Despite creaky technical implementation, Electronic Arts have managed to not totally screw up another Star Wars-themed game. Jedi: Fallen Order is a positive addition to the franchise. Storytelling, beautiful graphics, and fighting mechanism make the game immersive. Every Star Wars fan fantasy is to become a Jedi and Fallen Order may be closest to it for now. I would recommend this game primarily to Star Wars fans and for those who enjoy games with a challenge.
