Undertale is a retro-style RPG in which you are the sole human trying to find your way out of the Underground filled with characterful monsters that you can either ignore, befriend or fight and kill. The choice is yours to make, and it has repercussions on the game world as you go on.
You spend most of your time in Undertale walking through diverse areas of the Underground and talking to its peculiar inhabitants, whose dialogue is filled with dark humor and wit. There is a traditional turn-based JRPG battle system that cleverly applies minigames to attacking and defending, while you can always talk your way out of a battle or flee and not hurt the monsters. It is possible to finish the game without hurting a single soul and despite the way you approach the conflicts in the game, the result is satisfying thanks to it’s quirky mechanics and the ability to surprise and make you laugh right until the end of your journey.
It is possible to haste trough Undertale in only a few hours as it is a short and gentle game, or you can take your time, look around as you go, and enjoy the vivid world so clearly created with a lot of love and devotion for the genre and video games as a whole, as I did. Either way is fine, because the replayability value is immense. This is a game that sticks with you long after you’ve moved on to other things, and those games don’t come along often.
