Course description: In this course, we engage in critical discussions about the roles of reading and writing in research and in relation to issues of quality and as it is relevant to students’ own research projects. We will reflect on the ways in which we search for literature and practice reading as a path to ‘knowing’ (versus knowledge as a product). We explore academic writing within historical contexts including changing paradigms, politics of research, researcher’s positionality and relations with participants, changing ethics of research and representational transformations.

Learning outcomes:

Students understand the roles of reading and writing in the whole research process.

Students understand the roles of reading and writing for good quality research and as applied for their own dissertations.

Students develop different practices of reading for knowing.

Students learn how writing addresses a variety of issues with research and learn about and practice different forms of writing.
