In this course, students become familiar with several influential genres in different media. These genres include, among others, Gothic literature, detective fiction, tragedy and the Western. They are examined in their socio-historical contexts and discussed through a range of contemporary theoretical approaches to literature and other media. In addition to engaging with different types of literary texts, the course will also familiarise students with different visual media such as film and comics and give them the basic tools for analysing them.
