Core content:
- Light fundamentals: ray, wave, and particle optics
- Wave optics: Maxwell’s equations, planewaves, reflection, refraction, interference and diffraction
- Light–matter interactions: Dispersion of optical materials (Lorentz model), absorption, emission
- Geometrical optics: paraxial approximation, lenses, mirror, prism
- Optical instruments: basics of human vision, microscopes, telescopes and imaging systems
Complementary knowledge:
- Polarization: linear, circular, elliptical
- Light sources: stimulated emission, LED and laser
- Numerical analysis of propagating waves
Special knowledge:
- Coherence of light
