  1. Matlab programming: numerical analysis of multilayer thin films and waveguides
  2. Electromagnetics: waves at interfaces, transfer-matrix formalism
  3. Optical thin-film structures: Single film, multilayer films, and related components
  4. Basic waveguide structures: mirror waveguides, dielectric slab waveguides, optical fibers, surface-plasmon polaritons
  5. Properties of guided waves: optical waveguide mode, effective index
  6. Coupled-mode theory: distributed feedback, fiber Bragg gratings, directional couplers
  7. Photonic integrated circuits: components and systems, integrated structures

Complementary knowledge

  1. Visualization of electromagnetic fields in multilayers and waveguides
  2. Optimization of thin-film structures for specific applications
  3. Numerical analysis of components using coupled-mode theory
