Doctoral degree


Upon completion of the programme, you will have reliably demonstrated your ability to carry out independent research. You will have an in-depth understanding of your field of research and possess broad knowledge of the theories, traditions, research methods and analysis techniques in your field. You will be able to effectively present your perspective and reasoning about the societal impact of your discipline and the significance of your research. Your broad knowledge base will not only enable you to keep track of the latest research and advancements in your field but also position yourself as an expert in your field in different and changing environments. You will be able to communicate effectively in your chosen language, both orally and in writing, and be familiar with the culture(s) and society of the countries where your chosen language is spoken. You will be familiar with the principles of scientific integrity and ethics and the methods for collecting data for research purposes. You will be able to independently formulate critical and constructive arguments and have the knowledge and skills to communicate and disseminate research findings both orally and in writing. You will have an overall understanding of language, translation and literature studies as scientific disciplines.

Doctoral Programme in Language Studies


The following post-master degrees are offered at the Doctoral Programme in Language Studies 

  • Doctor of Philosophy
  • Licentiate of Philosophy (an optional intermediate step towards the doctoral degree)

A doctoral student may earn his/her degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • English Philology
  • Finnish Language
  • German Language and Culture
  • Russian Language and Culture
  • Scandinavian Languages
  • Translation Studies (English, Swedish, German, or Russian)

Doctoral degree consists of studies supporting the research work (40 ECTS) and a doctoral dissertation (200 ECTS) as follows:


1. General academic competences, min. 10 credits

· research skills

· scientific expertise

· communication skills

· pedagogical skills

Mandatory: Research ethics


2. Discipline- and field-specific studies, min. 25 credits

· competencies relating to a specific field of research

· competencies relating to a specific discipline

Mandatory: Research seminar
