- Structure and studies
The doctoral programme prepares students for challenging research, R&D and specialist careers relating to interaction between people, society and technology. The field has a strong multidisciplinary dimension and it requires an in-depth understanding of a broad range of research methodologies and approaches.
The doctoral programme explores the relationships between people, knowledge and technology, which often requires the pooling of disciplinary knowledge and expertise in areas ranging from computer science and information studies to human sciences, such as psychology and sociology.
Learning outcomes for a doctoral degree:
As set out in the Finnish Government Decree on University Degrees, the objectives of doctoral education are that the student:
1) develops an in-depth understanding of his or her own field of research and its social significance;
2) gains the knowledge and skills to apply scientific research methods independently and critically and produce new scientific knowledge within her or his field of research;
3) becomes familiar with the innovations, development, basic problems, research methods and employment prospects relating to her or his field of research;
4) gains such knowledge of the general theory of science and of other disciplines relating to her or his own field of research as enables him or her to follow developments in them;
5) develops the necessary social, communication and language skills to take on challenging specialist and management roles in both national and international environments in a globally responsible manner.
DEGREE: DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY OR DOCTOR OF SCIENCE (TECHNOLOGY)
Students who satisfy the requirements of the doctoral programme will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Doctor of Science in Technology (DTech).
Students have the option to earn the degree of Licentiate of Philosophy (Lic.Phil) or Licentiate of Science in Technology (LTech) as an intermediate step towards the doctoral degree.
Doctoral degree
A doctoral degree consists of doctoral studies (40 credits) and a doctoral dissertation (200 credits) as follows:
1. General academic competences, min. 10 credits
• research skills
• scientific expertise
• communication skills
• pedagogical skills
Mandatory: research ethics, 3-5 credits
2. Discipline- and field-specific studies, min. 25 credits
• competencies relating to a specific field of research
• methodological competencies relating to the field of the doctoral dissertation
• competencies relating to a specific discipline
Mandatory units: Postgraduate seminar in the major subject
