Objectives

Students who have completed a master’s degree in social sciences with a specialisation in social anthropology are able to describe the special characteristics of social anthropology among the social sciences and are familiar with the main developments in the intellectual history of anthropology. They possess the skills required to analytically examine the global cultural spectrum and its dynamic changes. They understand the role of Finnish society in transnational and global relations and processes. They are able to formulate anthropologically meaningful research problems, to collect relevant research data, to analyse it and to report on the results. They recognize the uniqueness of ethnographic research and understand the links between anthropological theory formation and the ethnographic approach. They are aware of the diverse employment opportunities that are available to anthropologists, they master the concepts that can be used to describe cultural diversity, and they are able to see local contexts and related practices as part of a global system.
