Learning Outcomes

The target of the course is to make participants understand the importance and factors of adhesion related to materials performance and the fundamental concepts of crack, fracture and delamination related to failure of adhesive bond. The target skills are the ability to apply surface treatments for specific materials to improve adhesion and the ability to plan work for understanding and solving practical problems related to the enhancement and semi-empirical prediction of adhesion.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Main factors affecting adhesive bonds at material interfaces  The student is able to solve possible adhesion problems in different production processes and can predict functionality of materials in terms of adhesion at bonds.
2. Surface characteristics: Wetting and surface energy  Contact angle measurements  DIfferent models of surface enregy determination
3. Importance of adhesion to material performance  Specific surface treatment and modification methods (e.g. corona, flame, plasma, chemical modification (primers, adhesion promoters)  Surface treatment devices
4. Concepts of crack, fracture and delamination  Numerical models for bond failure  Nonlinearity of materials, damage
5. Understands scientific thinking, reasoning and explanation   Evaluates and develops his/her information gathering processes  Knows the risks associated with digital environments and takes them into account in his/her own actions
6.   Gathers, processes, evaluates, analyses and uses information in a versatile, critical and ethical way
7.   Has mastered at least one foreign language at a level that allows him/her to follow the developments in the field and to work in an international environment
