Successfully completing three selected modules of the course. The requirements for each module include a small exam and mandatory exercises and/or small project. Grading is based on the exam and quaility of the exercise and project returns.

Learning Outcomes

The goal is to strengthen the communication theoretic basis for advanced wireless system development. After completing the course, a student has gained in-depth expertise in selected timely topics in the field of wireless communication waveforms, signal processing functions, and coding methods.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Review of linear digital modulation methods. Advanced communication waveforms and related signal processing.  Advanced waveforms and transmission schemes, e.g., non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), constant-envelope waveforms
2. Basics of statistical signal processing and detection and estimation theory, with application in channel estimation and equalization.  Deeper understanding of detection and estimation theory.
3. Multiantenna and MIMO system concepts and detection methods. Massive MIMO.  Deeper understanding of MIMO techniques.
4. Advanced error control coding methods: turbo codes, LDPC codes, polar codes.   Deeper understanding of advanced detection and decoding methods.
5. Spread-spectrum techniques * DS-CDMA in wireless communication and positioning systems * Multicarrier CDMA * Sparse code multiple access (SCMA)
6. Advanced topics in information theory * Multiuser information theory * Information theoretic approach to quantization and RF imperfections

Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes

The list of modules/contents is tentative and selected modules will be implemented, depending on students' interests. In addition to attending the learning sessions and reading the lecture notes/text book, working independently on the homeworks and Matlab problems is a good way for profoundly adopting the core contents.

Assessment scale:

Numerical evaluation scale (0-5)
