Objectives
To learn the properties and pratical usage issues of important microsensors, microactuators and active materials through a hands-on and problem-based approach.

Contents

1. PC-based data acquisition and control systems, the use of basic laboratory equipment.  Real-time Linux and Labview based data acquisition and control software (how to use).    
2. Microaccelerometers: advantages and disadvantages of different types,how to use in practice in different applications.  Operation principles.    
3. Piezoelectric actuators: advantages and disadvantages of different types,how to use in practise.  Operation principles.  Control issues. 
4. Shape memory actuators: advantages and disadvantages, how to use in practise.  Operation principles.    
5. Microfluidics: micropumps and micromixers, advantages and disadvantages of different types,how to use in practise.  Operation principles.    

Requirements for completing the course
Preliminary and final reports for all the laboratory works, participance in the laboratory work sessions

Assessment criteria
Each preliminary and final report has to be accepted before getting the final grade (accepted). Each laboratory work has its own acceptance criteria.
