Principles and baselines related to teaching and learning

-

Objectives

To learn the properties and issues in practical usage of important microsensors, microactuators and active materials through a hands-on and problem-based approach.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. PC-based data acquisition and control systems, the use of basic laboratory equipment.  Real-time Linux and Labview based data acquisition and control software (how to use).  Development of own data acquisition and control software.
2. Microsensors: accelerometers, hall sensors and magnetoresistive sensors. Advantages and disadvantages of different types, how to use in practice in different applications.  Operation principles of acceleration, Hall and megnetoresistive sensors. How to use laser dispalcement sensors.
3. Active actuator materials: piezoelectric actuators and shape memory actuators. Advantages and disadvantages of different types, how to use in practise.  Operation principles of piezoelectric, SMA, voice coil and stepper motor actuators.   Control issues of the actuators.
4. Microfluidics: PDMS microfabrication, micropumps and micromixers. Advantages and disadvantages of different types, how to use in practise.  Operation principles of the micropumps and micromixers.   Material properties of PDMS.
5. Cell micromanipulation using capillary pressure microinjection.   Other microinjection principles.

Evaluation criteria for the course

Each preliminary and final report has to be accepted before getting the final grade (accepted). Each laboratory work has its own acceptance criteria.
