Learning outcomes

This course widens the theoretical and practical knowledge of an Integrated RF Circuit Designer and brings it to the demands of the MSc. level. Upon completing the course, the student can independently analyze and design some major RF-blocks needed in modern integrated transceivers. The student is able to: -Describe the general concepts of modern integrated transceivers; -Derive Low-Noise Amplifier (LNA) and Voltage-Controlled Oscillator (VCO) performance parameters from the radio system specifications; -Make a literature review of state-of-the-art RF blocks and make a critical comparison of their performance and features; -Describe the advanced models and non-idealities of GHz-range passive components and MOS transistors; -Use CAD software tools of CADENCE fluently for circuit analysis and evaluation. -Analyze and design some major LNA and VCO topologies to fulfill the concurrent specifications needed in 3G and software radio systems; -Evaluate RF circuits by performing measurements using Network analyzer and Spectrum analyzer.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. TRANSCEIVERS: The concepts of wireless GHz-range integrated transceivers. Direct conversion receivers and solutions for their implementation problems. Derivation of the integrated LNA and VCO specifications from the systems specifications.  Transmitter blocks. Phase Locked Loop and its sub-blocks; Frequency dividers by master-slave latch and its kick-back noise.
2. CAD MODELS: GHz-range modeling of integrated passive components and MOS transistor for the circuit analysis.
3. AMPLIFIERS: Topologies, parameters and design. Semi-symbolic analysis with the 5 GHz Common-Gate LNA as a case study. Implementation of variable gain. Noise and linearity analysis. LNA measurements with HD8753D Network Analyzer.   Reconfiguration of LNA for the multi-standard use. LNA-Mixer interface.
4. STATE-OF-THE-ART OSCILLATORS: Analysis of Double Cross-Coupled VCO; its operation, features and design. Interface blocks of oscillator, such as buffers, AGC, bias circuitry and their influence on the VCO performance. VCO measurements with R&S FSEM Spectrum Analyzer and HP 4352B VCO/PLL Measurement System.
5. MIXED-MODE CIRCUITS: Bandpass Sample-and-Hold Amplifier; its operation, features and design.  Oversampling and noise-shaping techniques in switched capacitor and sigma-delta structures.
6. SOFTWARE USED: 80% Cadence with 45-nm Generic Design Kit and occasionally Orcad PSpice and MAPLE in the laboratory exercises and circuit analysis, respectively.
