Learning outcomes
- | Majoring in Signal Processing deepens the student’s theoretical and practical skills of analysing signals and designing signal processing methods and systems, especially for one of the major application areas of signal processing. Advanced studies in signal processing teach the student to independently select the optimal signal processing methods when confronted with a new kind of signal processing problem. The goal is to train the students to design hardware and software for signal processing systems. |
- | Basis for doctoral studies in the future. |

Additional information
Signal processing and its applications are playing an increasingly important role in our everyday lives. Smart phones, MP3 players, DVD players and digital TV broadcasting are just a short excerpt from a long and continuously developing list of applications based on advanced signal processing methods. The Signal Processing major subject's courses deal with processing and interpreting digital signals in the wide sense of their information content. The mathematical basis of signal processing methods and algorithms is particularly emphasised. Key application areas of these algorithms comprise telecommunications, instrumentation and automation, as well as various kinds of speech, audio, image and video representation, compression, processing and delivery. The student can complete only one of the three advanced study modules in Signal Processing (Computational Systems Biology, Multimedia or Signal Processing). Example profiles to assist the students to choose the courses: Visual Signal Processing: SGN-2706 Nonlinear Signal Processing, SGN-3057 Digital Image Processing II, SGN-3106 Digital Video Processing and SGN-3156 Video Compression. Audio Signal Processing: SGN-4106 Speech Recognition, SGN-4227 Digital Audio Processing and Analysis, SGN-2306 Signal Compression, SGN-4507 Speech Recognition Laboratory, SGN-5016 Multimedia Signal Processing and SGN-2607 Statistical Signal Processing. Understanding of Signals: SGN-2556 Pattern Recognition, SGN-2806 Neural Computation, SGN-4106 Speech Recognition, SGN-5508 Multimedia Analysis and Retrieval, SGN-4507 Speech Recognition Laboratory and SGN-5306 Knowledge Mining.
