Requirements
Sustainable Design Studio is an advanced course suitable for 5th year students, dealing with principles and practices of sustainable planning and architectural design. The student will be employed in given design tasks that require the capability of integrating complex design issues at different scale levels. The work will be carried out partly in groups of about 5 students with mixed backgrounds (architecture and civil engineering), partly independently. The course comprises lectures, studio meetings and a critic session.
Engineering students are asked to contact Prof. Edelman to discuss the content of individual assignment as part of the studio.
Completion parts must belong to the same implementation
Learning Outcomes
After the course the student will be able to identify the main features of sustainable expressions in Finnish design and explain the background of sustainability trends. The student will be able to analyze the social, cultural and environmental aspects of sustainability and discuss the principles of sustainable planning and design. During the course, the student will acquire a mature control of the project in different areas of applicability. He/she will develop a personal approach to the sustainability issues and learn to apply and integrate efficiently its principles within a complex design task.
Content
Content | Core content | Complementary knowledge | Specialist knowledge |
1. | Advanced design skills and integration of sustainability principles in the design process, within the elaboration of a complex design task. | A comprehensive and user-oriented perspective that takes into account various aspects, such as well-being, aesthetics, social impact and environmental control. | Innovative solutions for sustainable architecture. |
2. | Development of sustainable design solutions that comply to local regulations as well as to functional, aesthetical and social requirements. | Design solutions from urban to detailed scale and implementation of structural and technical systems into the project. |
Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes
Active participation in the course's activities is highly recommended. Attendance to lectures, studio meetings and critiques is mandatory. The final design project will be evaluated on a 0-5 grading scale. Evaluation criteria take account of: - Conceptual solution - Architectural expression - Relation to the surrounding environment - Factors of sustainability - Functional and spatial qualities - Construction materials and techniques
Assessment scale:
Numerical evaluation scale (1-5) will be used on the course

The studio looks at the design and development of city districts at multiple scales. The City of Turku has been selected as the subject of the studio in fall 2013. The objective of the studio is to analyze and design solutions related to sustainable cities, with a project that can be developed at either urban or architectural scale. The main focus is on the design solutions, but the meaning and importance of the development process will be considered together with them. In other words, the projects affect the process and vice versa, and therefore they both need to be considered equally relevant in the sustainable design process. |
