Course can be done based on literature that will be agreed with the responsible teacher. Course can be passed with an exam or with a report/literature work and/or lab work that has been agreed with the responsible teacher. This course is for paper converting's post-graduate students only.

Learning Outcomes

Students will learn what is the role of adhesion in paper and paperboard converting operations and in packaging materials and end-products. Students also learn how adhesion is formed and how it can be improved. Also measurement methods of adhesion will be lectured.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. During the course the definition of adhesion will be introduced, as well as the different adhesion theories. The role of adhesion in paper and paperboard converting processes will be discussed. In addition, the role of adhesion in packaging materials and end-products will be introduced. Definition of surface energy, related theory and the measuring of surface energy will be discussed.   The extrusion coating process parameters affecting adhesion will be discussed. Also the measurement methods of adhesion will be introduced.  Different surface and pre-treatments will be introduced. These include ozone treatment, priming, flame, corona and plasma treatment.
