Learning Outcomes

Student having taken the course are expected to have a solid understanding of the FACTS and HVDC technology; the way modern power electronics valves, converter topologies and control is benefitting the transmission part of the high-voltage, high-power electrical grid; the way in which power system application tools are modified to assess the FACTS technology in network-wide studies and the scope that the FACTS technology has in improving the security of transmission with higher through-puts and with minimum investment

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Week 1: An overview of the FACTS and VSC-HVDC transmission philosophies. A review of the main FACTS and VSC-HVDC installations in the world
2. Week 2: Power transmission equipment with conventional thyristor valves (SVC and TCSC) and HVDC links
3. Week 3: FACTS equipment with IGBT valves (STATCOM, UPFC, VSC-HVDC)
4. Week 4: Modelling of selected FACTS equipment in power flows; assessing their impact on network-wide applications, using power flows
5. Week 5: Modelling of VSC-HVDC transmission systems in power flows; assessing their impact on network-wide applications, using power flows
6. Week 6: Optimal Power Flows (OPF) using Newton'’s method; representation of selected FACTS and VSC-HVDC equipment in OPF; Assessing their impact on network-wide applications, using OPF
7. Week 7: Electromagnetic transients in power systems: representation of FACTS and VSC-HVDC equipment in electromagnetic transient programs and test cases using PSCAD/EMTDC
