Description:

A system is defined as an entity that maintains its existence through the mutual interaction of its parts. Modern systems, such as in Production, Aerospace, Transportation, Robotics and Intelligent Machines, Information and Networks, are complex due to the multiple interactions among their various parts. Understanding the structure and behavior of such systems is crucial for the engineering community. The field of Systems Engineering provide modelling languages, methods and tools to study and evaluate the performance of systems. This course provides a perspective on the disciplines of Systems Engineering with a flavor of Systems Thinking, with the design and modelling of systems being the central focus. Emphasis will be put on key concepts such as the gathering, refining, modelling and management of design requirements, the system architecture design, the search for internal and external contradictions, the simulation and evaluation of systems design. The course includes lectures, project work and seminars.
