Requirements

Final exam or two mid exams, moodle assignments, two laboratory exercises + report. Final grade will be based on either a) two mid exams and two reports or b) final exam and two reports. Grading scale in exams and with reports is 0-5.
Completion parts must belong to the same implementation

Learning Outcomes

After finishing the course, the student is able to explain processing technologies of converted papers/paperboards and packaging materials, especially (co)extrusion coating, dispersion coating and multilayer structures. Laboratory exercises (pilot line and laboratory analysis) are included in the course in order to create connection between the theory and practice in converting processes and the student is also able to develop academic reporting skills.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. The student can explain the manufacturing techniques and processes of paper and paperboard converting. He/she is able to describe different extrusion and dispersion coating, film, lamination and thin layer coating techniques. Adhesion theories and the role of adhesion in the converting processes of paper and/or paperboard and final products will be explained.  The student can compare applicability of different materials and nanotechnologies to coating and lamination processes. Process parameters and variations will be introduced in theory and practice during the course.  The student is able to solve possible problems in coating and lamination processes and can predict functionality of coating/lamination by the properties on the materials. Different surface and pre treatment methods (e.g. corona, flame and plasma) that are in use in paper/paperboard converting will be introduced during the course.
