Upon successful completion of the course, students will demonstrate capabilities in managing projects and in leading non-experts in translation work. They will have advanced competences in translating in larger projects, evaluating others? translations, editing, and project work. In addition, students will have a good understanding of the history, goals, justifications and results of austerity politics, and be able to critically evaluate austerity as an economic policy.

MVKS54 is a part of the School of Management’s Austerity-seminaari course: KATTAS40, https://www10.uta.fi/opas/opetusohjelma/marjapuuro.htm?id=34454. The course is multidisciplinary, including students and teachers from the areas of economics, social sciences, translation studies, and others.

The main focus of MVKS54 is to translate a popular economics book (Mark Blyth’s Austerity: The History of a Dangerous Idea)  from English into Finnish. It will be published by the Vastapaino publishing house in the spring of 2017. Translation Studies students will act as senior translator/project managers for small translation teams made up of students from a variety of disciplines, and will also participate in the project work: translating, terminology work, and editing. Students can choose to complete only the translation project (5 credits), or opt for 10 credits by taking on extra tasks in the project or by participating in the KATTAS40 course’s second part, in which small teams write articles on the themes of the book and/or other relevant materials. Students will be responsible for creating project documentation (project plans, etc.) and some kind of reflection.

Teaching

The project starts in September and will continue through period 3. A large bulk of work is likely to take place in the 2nd period.

The class meeting time will be Friday mornings.
