General description

Theoretically and methodologically the study module concentrates on comparative research of media systems, institutions, organizations and markets including policy and regulation of these areas. In addition, the module includes a review of approaches and concepts of the normative theories of the media, and demonstrates how to apply these measures to the comparison of media structures and regulation as well as to the analysis of current change. The module will give an overview of key approaches and research traditions of the field and, in particular, describe and analyze the ongoing change from policy and regulation to market- and actor-oriented governance.

Learning outcomes

Having done this module the student is able to conceptualize and analyse the structures and activities of media institutions and markets as well as the similarities and differences between the overall media systems. The student is able to depict the central factors which affect the background and development of media systems and to evaluate the consequences of change of these systems. The student will also learn to critically evaluate the normative basis of structures and activities of the media, and the approaches and methods of relevant research of the field.

Teaching methods

Lectures (20 hrs) and lecture diary, plus a separate book exam.

A book exam (3 ECTS) through the electronic exam system (tenttis@uta.fi) of the university. The exam consists of altogether two books of which one is compulsory for all (Hallin and Mancini 2004) and the other is to be selected from the options at point 2 below.
