This course aims to develop your understanding of business ethics and how organisations follow the code of ethics in their daily operations. The course is designed to provide insights into ethical theories and tools for developing ethical business practices along with your own exploration of ethical decision making and how to develop ethical leadership. However, the part of learning is developing an appreciation of your own aptitude and commitment for becoming an ethical professional.
Pre-Exam
Prior to the course start, students are required to take an electronic pre-exam covering the basics of business ethics. The examination material covers the chapters 1-2 (pp. 3-90) from the core text book:

Please notice that this course requires obligatory attendance on lectures and commitment to fulfil the tasks in between the lectures. The tasks include working in groups to write a group report, individual learning assignments and an exam during last lecture Feb. 26.

To apply for the course, register online and also write a motivation paper (1-2 pages) and send it to the teacher as an attachment of an e-mail (johanna.heiskanen@staff.uta.fi) at the latest Jan 8th 2015. Within the motivation paper you should tell why you are interested in this course. State also how well you are familiar with the issues of corporate social responsibility and sustainability. Include a short description of your previous studies and those involved with business, corporate responsibility and sustainability. Also state an area/ sector of business which is at the centre of your interest.

- Start-up lecture and composing of the working groups.
- Active group work and online participation: discussions on specific weekly topics based on appropriate literature and online links (the material is given on weekly basis, and it includes scientific articles, internet links and related newspaper articles).
- The group work aims for case studies based on a particular country, region, firm or any other relevant actor in the innovation process, including empirical applications of the concepts and theories of the course material.
- Each group presents its work in a seminar session (with PowerPoint slides), while the other groups give prepared comments on the presentation.
- After the seminar presentation, and taking into account the comments raised by the seminar audience, the group works are revised to a final essay (5-10 pages typewritten with references).
