In this course, we understand doctoral article writing as text work, identity work and social practice to produce authoritative writing and an authoritative scholar after Barbara Kamler and Pat Thomson’s work. We focus on writing literature reviews, abstracts and introductions to journal articles. We understand these texts as situated within the institution and politics of the academy.
In this course, students learn about key debates in the philosophy of social science to recognize how different paradigms conceptualize knowledge, validity and the researchers’ position. Students also consider the role of some major contemporary theoretical perspectives in educational research.
The students will be introduced to:
-the theory of expansive learning and its epistemological underpinnings
-the differences between this and other approaches to learning
-the specific methods of formative interventions and data analysis derived from the theory
The students will be encouraged to:
-explore links between the conceptual and methodological resources of expansive learning and their own doctoral research
Teaching methods
Lectures, discussions, hands-on tasks, and student presentations
Modes of study
