The course consists of three parts: The Orientation course for international students at UTA, 26-31.8.2013, the Orientation to Academic culture and degree studies on 16 and 23 September and separate orientation lectures and events of the degree programme, teaching times announced separately.
Finnish students are exempt from the parts of the course that cover Finnish language, society and systems. Please contact the teacher in charge in case of any questions.

This module is made up of class sessions including group work (20 hours), as well as independent out of class tasks (61 hours). The module will be two periods long and will take place in the autumn semester of the first year of the master’s degree programme.
Basic knowledge of molecular biology is a prerequisite.

As a prerequisite, basic programming skills are needed. Also, basics of statistics and the R language are recommended. Completion of BIO2270 Introduction to statistics in the same period provides sufficient skills.

This course covers basic concepts in statistics, commonly used numerical and graphical methods of descriptive statistics, principles of statistical inference, statistical models, likelihood, point and interval estimators, and statistical tests. The R language is used throughout the course.
BIO4440 Biological data analysis with R is recommended in the same period.
