Student Ambassador Yen Tran moved to Tampere from Vietnam for her ICT studies in TAMK.

How long have you been in Tampere and what brought you here originally?

I moved to Tampere in 2019. I came here to pursue my 4 years Bachelor's degree in ICT at TAMK.

What subject do you study and how did you choose it?

I am following the Bachelor's Degree Programme in Software Engineering.

My decision was derived from numerous reasons. Mainly, it was my desire for an ICT career. During my earlier studies in Vietnam, I followed some classes in programming and fell in love with it.

How would you describe Tampere as a student city?

I would regard Tampere as a great combination of modernity and nature.

Firstly, the city centre contains many high-end shops and spectacular buildings, but the surrounding areas still have abundant forests and a peaceful atmosphere.

Secondly, the cost of living in Tampere is affordable and part-time jobs are somehow available for students. Student housing agencies like TOAS or POAS offer many options for a low cost of living. Also, the student union and student-centred companies are very supportive; they offer very good deals for all students about accommodation, services, etc.

Lastly, cutural exchanges happen frequently. Exhibitions and museums are also free, on some occasions.

Have you had issues settling in Tampere? How did you overcome difficulties?

While settling in Tampere, I was struck by culture shock since it was my first time studying abroad by myself with no friends or relatives nearby. Fortunately, I overcame it by jogging in nature. When I was under pressure, I would take a short jog around my area and clear my mind.

In addition, being involved in activities outside the classroom has helped me. Being a student ambassador and international tutor, using SportUni facilities or external courses has made a difference in my life.

For example, I joined one robotic competition with TAMK's team and made many international friends both at work and school.

To whom would you recommend Tampere as a place to study and why?

I would proudly recommend Tampere and TAMK to everyone who aims to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in ICT. Besides the comparable quality, affordable cost of living, and supportive student communities, career prospects are quite promising for both graduates and undergraduates.
