Language Studies
The Languages Unit explores the intricacies of human interaction and communication. Our research examines the importance of language in society and the challenges of cultural and linguistic diversity. Our degree programme in languages provides students with in-depth expertise in the areas of language, culture, translation and interpretation.
The Language Unit supports continuous interplay between research and teaching. Research activities are carried out by groups coordinated by the Multidisciplinary Research Centre for Languages and Cultures Plural. The different research groups that specialise in the study of languages, translation, literature or culture share a common interest in social shift, change and movement.
Our areas of priority in research include, for example:
- Linguistic variation and change
- Interaction and discourse
- Multilingualism, media and democracy
- Spatial and cultural representations
- Experiences, affects and attitudes
The degree programme in languages produces graduates with communication prowess, an in-depth understanding of the digital media landscape and multicultural competencies. Our skilled graduates typically go on to work, for example, as language teachers, researchers specialising in linguistics or cultural studies, or as translators and interpreters in the changing digital media landscape.
While pursuing your bachelor’s degree, you will specialise in your selected major (Finnish, English, Swedish, German, Russian) and expand your learning by completing courses available in your own programme (such as Danish, Norwegian, Estonia, Czech, introduction to translation and interpretation) or by selecting elective courses from across our multidisciplinary Faculty (such as communications, game research, human-computer interaction, robotics) or the entire University.
If you are keen to know more about Russian culture and society, the Russian studies module (taught in English) is open for all students and staff at Tampere University.
